Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) use the constant temperature of the earth as the exchange medium instead of the outside air temperature. This allows the system to reach fairly high efficiencies on the coldest of winter nights. While many parts of the country experience seasonal temperature extremes, from scorching heat in the summer to sub-zero cold in the winter, a few feet below the earth's surface the ground remains at a relatively constant temperature. As with any heat pump, geothermal and water-source heat pumps are able to heat, cool, and, if so equipped, supply the house with hot water. ~ US Department of Energy | Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating & Electrical Radiant Floor Heating - Radiant heating has a number of advantages: it is more efficient than baseboard heating and usually more efficient than forced-air heating because no energy is lost through ducts. Hydronic (liquid) systems are the most popular and cost-effective radiant heating systems for heating-dominated climates. Hydronic radiant floor systems pump heated water from a boiler through tubing laid in a pattern underneath the floor. Electric radiant floors typically consist of electric cables built into the floor. Systems that feature mats of electrically conductive plastic are also available, and are mounted onto the subfloor below a floor covering such as tile. Electric radiant floors are more cost-effective if they include a significant thermal mass, such as a thick concrete floor. ~ US Department of Energy | Solar Electric and Hot Water - A solar electric or photovoltaic (PV) systems can be a reliable and pollution-free producer of electricity for your home or office. And they're becoming more affordable all the time. Water heating can account for 14%–25% of the energy consumed in your home. Solar water heaters can be a cost-effective way to generate hot water for your home. They can be used in any climate, and the fuel they use - sunshine - is free. ~ US Department of Energy
